[EN] Hello lovelies!

I'm  bit behind with posting all the fabulous posts I have prepared for you, so here we go with another Perthian street art gem.

Remember when I told you about FORM, the non-profit organisation that brings street artists to Perth and organises blank spaces for them to place their works? I told you about it here. Thanks to this organisation there have been heaps of new murals popping up everywhere over the past weeks. 

What you see in the pics is - wait for it - a public toilet. Yes, really! It's located in the middle of my hood, East Vic Park, in a car park next to a busy supermarket. Its four walls show artworks of different artists, one on each side.

When we took these photos two weeks ago the fourth wall was still in progress and we caught one of the artists in the act. Live street art so to speak!

So we watched the mural emerge for a while and afterwards grabbed a coffee at our favourite coffee shop The Imp. Like my new shirt?

[DE] Hallo zusammen!

Ich hänge mal wieder hoffnungslos hinterher mit all den tollen Posts die ich für euch schon vorbereitet hab, deshalb gibts hier direkt mal wieder eine weitere Perth'sche Streetart Perle.

Erinnert ihr euch daran, dass ich euch letztens von FORM erzählt habe, einer gemeinnützigen Organisation, die allerlei Künstler nach Perth holt und ihnen weiße Wände für ihre Projekte organisiert? Hier könnt ihr es nochmal nachlesen. Dank dieser Organisation sind wie von Zauberhand in den letzten Wochen überall in der Stadt neue Graffitis aufgetaucht.

Was ihr in den Bildern seht ist - man mag es kaum glauben - eine öffentliche Toilette! Ja wirklich! Stehen tut sie mitten in meiner Hood, East Vic Park, auf einem Parkplatz neben einem gutbesuchten Supermarkt. Auf jeder der vier Wände ist ein Werk von einem anderen Künstler zu sehen. Als wir vor zwei Wochen diese Fotos geschossen haben, war die vierte Seite noch gar nicht fertig bemalt und wir haben die Künstlerin mitten im Mal-Prozess angetroffen. Live und in Farbe, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes quasi!

Also haben wir ihr eine Weile beim Pinseln zugeschaut und sind danach zu unserem Lieblingscafe The Imp getingelt um ein Käffchen zu trinken. Gefällt euch mein neues Shirt?

[EN] Hello all!

It's artsy-fartsy Wednesday! I felt like showing you some more of Perth's beautiful street art.

This city seems unbelievably open to new art works, has some amazing artist collectives, suburb-specific development clubs and lots and lots of blank walls for awesome graffitis.

Perth is hip - in a positive way! I have never seen a place with people who care so much about their neighbourhoods, suburbs and vity in general. Victoria Park, Beaufort Street, Leederville, Northbridge... there are epicentres of art communities, but the waves this new urban environmental awareness makes reach many more corners of the city. Perth is colourful and multi-faceted and so is its street art.

This time I have put together photos of all the different street art pieces in Leederville, a young, vibrant and laid-back suburb near the city centre.

[DE] Hallo ihr Lieben!

Willkommen zum künstlerisch-kreativen Mittwoch! Mir war mal wieder danach, euch ein bisschen mehr von der tollen Street Art zu zeigen, die es hier in Perth gibt.
Diese Stadt ist so wundervoll unverklemmt und offen für neue Artworks, hat tolle Künstlerkollektive, sehr engagierte Projektentwicklungsgruppen in den einzelnen Vierteln und wahnsinnig viele leere Wände zum Anmalen.
Perth ist hip - und das im positiven Sinne! Ich habe noch nie eine Stadt gesehen, in der sich die Menschen so sehr für die Entwicklung und Mitgestaltung ihrer Viertel einsetzen. Victoria Park, Beaufort Street, Leederville, Northbridge... es gibt ganz klare Epizentren, doch die Wellen dieses neuen Kunst-Bewusstseins reichen auch weit bis in die Randgebiete der Stadt hinein. Perth ist bunt und facettenreich und genau so ist auch seine Streetart.
Dieses Mal habe ich euch speziell nur Fotos von den Graffitis in Leederville zusammengestellt, einem jungen lebhaften Viertel nahe der Innenstadt.

[EN] At the moment Perth gets more and more street art pieces every single day, all thanks to a great organisation called FORM. 
I have taken this passage from their own website as there is no better way to describe them and their fantastic vision:

"FORM is an independent, non-profit cultural organisation established in 1968 that develops and advocates for excellence in creativity and artistic practice in Western Australia.

We see creativity as a catalyst for positive change, and we believe that the best, most vibrant places to live are the ones that nurture dynamic creativity, showcase cultural diversity, insist on quality, and are shaped with people in mind."

 Not only do these people host symposiums and exhibitions, they also organise public painting projects with communities, find blank spaces all throughout the state of Western Australia and connect with all different kinds of artists to push and promote art and its development wherever it's possible.

[DE] Im Moment bekommt Perth jeden Tag mehr und mehr Streetart - und das hat die Stadt einer großartigen Organisation namens FORM zu verdanken.
Ich habe oben im englischen Text eine Passage von der Website der Organisation zitiert (in kursiv), in der sie beschreiben, was sie tun und was ihre Vision ist.
Ich finde es schwer, das ins Deutsche zu übersetzen ohne die schöne Wortwahl kaputtzumachen, aber ich versuche  es mal in der Kurzfassung. Sie sagen, dass Kreativität ein Katalysator für positive Veränderung darstellt und dass die besten Lebensräume solche sind, die die dynamische Kreativität der Menschen füttern, kulturelle Vielfalt zum Ausdruck bringen, auf Qualität bestehen und mit dem Gedanken geformt werden, stets das Beste für die Menschen, die dort leben, zu kreieren.
Puh, ich bin ganz unabsichtlich immer Königin der verschachtelten Sätze... Aber wenigstens den Inhalt richtig rübergebracht. Hoffe ich.

[DE] Ich hoffe euch hat dieser kunterbunte Post gefallen und ihr schaut immer mal wieder hier vorbei damit ihr mehr zukünftige Streetart Posts auch bloß nicht verpasst. Glaubt mir, es gibt noch sooo viel zu entdecken hier in Perth und ich kann es kaum abwarten das mit euch zu teilen!
Erst letzten Sonntag hab ich wieder ein brandneues Graffiti abgelichtet. Also bleibt in der Nähe, ein neuer Post kommt schon ganz bald...

[DE] Hallo ihr Lieben!

Heute gibt es für euch verspätet ein paar Bilder vom schönen Scarborough Beach hier in Perth. Am Ostermontag war es nämlich schön bewölkt und 20 Grad kühl - also endlich perfektes Strandwetter für Blassnasen wie mich!

Es ist ja nicht so, dass ich den Strand nicht mag. Ich habe ja nur ein Problem mit Hitze und meine vornehme Blässe mag die Sonne nicht. Strand find ich trotzdem super! Mit kühler Meeresbrise und einem heissen Kaffee ist das genau mein Ding!

[EN] Hello loves!

Today I have some nice pics of beautiful Scarborough Beach here in Perth for you. Easter Monday we had a cloudy sky and only 20°C - perfect beach weather for pale girls like me! People often get me wrong: It's not that I don't like the beach. My problem is the heat and that my "royal pallor" does not like the sun. Beach is totally up my alley though! Especially with a cool ocean breeze and a hot coffee!

[DE] Mir ist übrigens erst später aufgefallen wie ironisch es ist ein "Der weiße Hai" Shirt zum Strand anzuziehen! Aber egal, ich find das Shirt saucool! War  genau richtig mit roten Lippen und roter Mütze!

[EN] By the way later on I noticed how ironic it is to wear a Jaws shirt to the beach. But oh well, I love it! The whole look was just right with the red lips and the red beanie!

[DE] Hallo ihr!

Schon wieder ist das Wochenende vorbeigeflogen und war viel zu schnell rum, manno. Heute wollte ich noch diese Fotos von letzter Woche mit euch teilen bevor ich es wieder zu sehr vor mir herschiebe.

Also letzten Sonntag war ich im Yellagonga Regional Park im Norden von Perth. Dort stehen zwei süße alte Farmhäuschen bzw. das, was davon übrig ist. Das Timing war grandios, denn wir kamen genau zum Sonnenuntergang dort an und ich fand es einfach perfekt um Outfit-Fotos zu schießen.

Ich muss mich auch bei Jarryd für die Bilder bedanken, er hat das echt gut gemacht und wird immer besser mit meiner Kamera. Oder was meint ihr?

Another weekend is over too soon, damn. Today I would like to share these pictures from last Sunday with you before I procrastinate it again.

Last week I visited Yellagonga Regional Park in Perth's North. You can find the ruins of two lovely little farm houses there and the timing was perfect for outfit pics as the sun started setting when we arrived.

I really have to thank Jarryd for the photos, he did a very good job and keeps getting better each time he uses my camera. What do you think?

 

 [DE] Der Park wurde 1990 nach Yellagonga, einem Aboriginee-Häupling aus der Zeit der ersten europäischen Siedler, benannt. Das Areal, das wir besucht haben nennt sich Perry's Paddocks und ist eine Kulturerbestätte, benannt nach einem Herrn Jack Perry, der dort um 1900 Rennpferde gezüchtet hat. Auf den Fotos zu sehen sind das weisse Häuschen, Perry's Cottage, und das rötliche Gebäude, Perry's Bunkhouse, die beide auf der Koppel stehe, die in den 20er Jahren als Rennstrecke und Picknickfeld genutzt wurde.

[EN] The park was named Yellagonga Regional Park in 1990, in honour of Yellagonga, the regional Indigenous leader during European settlement. The area we went to is Perry's Paddocks, a registered heritage site named after Jack Perry who bred racehorses there at the turn of the 20th century. In the pictures you see Perry's Cottage and Perry's Paddocks, both are situated in the delightful paddock that was once the site for picnic races and shenanigans in the 1920's.

The Aquarium of Western Australia

[DE] Hallo ihr Lieben!

Ich bin vorm Fernseher kleben geblieben und es ist spät geworden. Ich wollte aber unbedingt vor dem Schlafengehen noch den Post hier raushauen, deshalb mal schnell die Story: Jarryd hat mich letzten Sonntag mit einem Trip zum AQWA Aquarium of Western Australia überrascht. Das war soo toll und lieb von ihm!

Das Aquarium befindet sich im schönen Perther Stadtteil Hillarys und liegt direkt am Meer. Man kann dort sogar mit Schildkröten, Rochen und Haien tauchen wenn man etwas tiefer in die Tasche greift. Wir haben uns allerdings nur für den normalen Besuch entschieden und haben uns alles in Ruhe im Trockenen angeschaut.

Spektakulär ist das sogenannte Schiffswrack Aquarium, durch das man mit einem Laufband gefahren wird. Man fährt (oder geht) quasi durch einen kreisförmigen Tunnel aus Plexiglas mitten durch das Aquarium und kann alles um sich herum sehen als stünde man selbst im Wasser. Es war SO cool!

Ich liebe Unterwasser-Dokus! Ich gucke die immer auf YouTube und hab mich in diesme Tunnel gefühlt, als wäre ich selbst mittendrin in so einer Doku!

[EN] Hello loves!

I got hooked on one of these stupid pawn shop shows on TV and now it's already late. I really wanted to publish this post before going to bed though, so here's the background story: Last Sunday Jarryd surprised me with a trip to AQWA The Aquarium of Western Australia. That was such a good idea and so nice of him!

The aquarium is located in Perth's beautiful suburb Hillarys which is directly by the sea. They even offer diving adventures with turtles, sharks and rays there if you pay a bit more. We, however, decided to just pay the normal entry fees and stay dry.

What I found really amazing was their so called shipwreck coast aquarium, which you can enter by foot or on a moving walkway belt conveyor thingy. You are slowly carried through a round underwater plexiglas tunnel that makes it look like you are standing right in the middle of the open sea. It was SO cool!

I love underwater documentariess, I always watch them on YouTube. This time it felt like I was part of such a documentary myself.

my first 3 months in Australia

Hey hey!

I arrived here in Perth on the 24th of October 2014, so today it is time for me to pause for a moment and look back on the last 3 months. So much has changed and yet so much has stayed the same. I left my old life and home behind to experience something completely new.

I had never left Europe before, I had never been to Australia - it was so scary and exciting to fly into the unknown.

So let's see what has happened, what has met my expectations and what was completely different from how I imagined it.

The city

My expectations: I am not exacly well-travelled so I could only try and get impressions of Perth from Google and Jarryd. He didn't really do a good job in making me excited about moving here because he had been living here for most of his life and said it's quite boring. However I was so thrilled about moving to the other end of the world that I pictured it to be big, pulsating and exciting.

What I think now: I have explored quite a bit of the city and its different suburbs now. For a European like me it appears HUGE because the Australians here do not live on top of each other in jam-packed apartment blocks. The city spreads out wide and outside of the centre you hardly ever see buildings with more than two stories.

Furthermore it's not boring at all here, very much the oppposite. There are awesome eateries and cafes everywhere and the city if sull of art, music and events. Very popular here at the moment are food trucks and food markets as well as upcycling and handmade products that are preferably sold on little markets and street festivals.

The weather

My expectations: HOT! I expected it to be unbearably hot every day with a burning sun that would cause me skin cancer and daily sunburns. I hate heat and was really nervous about if I'd be able to cope with the Australian summer. Sweating is just not my cup of tea at all...

What I think now: I totally overestimated it! It is a rather dry heat here and luckily a constant breeze from the nearby ocean makes it absolutely bearable. There are those odd days when it's 42°C but in general I'm happy that my expectations were wrong.

As an inveterate German I however have to admit I miss rainy, cloudy and grey days a bit. No one understands, I know. That's just me...

The insects

My expectations: Horrible! I have a big fat insect phobia and that's no exaggeration. I heard so many horror stories before I came here, especially about spiders! I was so worried about not being able to handle the many big and dangerous insects here.

What I think now: The same unfortunately. I have become a bit more relaxed about the quantitiy of encounters because I do not come across yucky crawlers as often as I expected. However if yxou come across an insect here it's always either huge or venomous or both. In my first week here I already met a Redback spider, one of the small but dangerous ones. Two weeks ago I had my first Praying Mantis sighting and then at work we had the biggest freakin cockroach I've ever seen in our office. It's really not a piece of cake at all for me, I'm trying to keep my cool but the phobia just really freaks me out. I have decided to tackle it with hypnotherapy soon.

The money

My expectations: I was told everything is more expensive than in Germany. Especially Perth has the reputation of being the most expensive city in Australia due to the many well-paid mining workers living here. Then again I was also told that the wages are obviously higher here than in Germany. So I hoped these two aspects would simply balance each other out.

What I think now: Well, I'm not 100% sure because I have not lived on my new job's wages yet. I've been working in my new job for one month now and next week I'll get my first payment. However I have already calculated my cost of living and think it will be okay. I won't be rich but it'll be enough to do all the nice things I've planned to do (weekend trips, dinners at nice restaurant, a new laptop, a new tattoo etc.).

I could actually list a million other things here but this shall be enough for now. Maybe I'll do another recap after 6 months then and talk about the other aspects I didn't mention today.
